Ramblings of a state employee [Feb. 28th, 2010|10:07 am]
Have I ever told anyone that I hate the Sacramento Bee.  They seem to take great pleasure in bashing state employees.  Today it's the amount of vacation/annual leave that people have accrued.  For pity sake!  We're working people just like the reporters at the Bee.

So why, you ask, do I read it?  That's a good question.  I did stop subscribing some time ago when they saw fit to publish our individual salaries.  Now I know that I work for a public entity and as such my salary is paid by the taxpayers.  However, I believe that while you, the taxpayer, is entitled to know how much my salary range makes (and I'll gladly point you in the direction of the place to find that information), I do NOT believe that it's any of your gd business exactly how much I personally make.  And since the Bee saw fit to publish that information, I made a statement and discontinued my 30 year plus subscription!  I still read it occasionally - online or go to our lodge to read it - but I'M NOT GOING TO PAY THEM ANY MONEY!!!!  I don't give a rat's ass if they go bankrupt, lose money, etc.  It's my opinion (and I know it's a small one) that just because someone CAN do something, it doesn't mean that they SHOULD do it!

Vacation/annual leave and sick leave rates have been the same ever since I came to work for the state of California in 1972.  They have never increased.  In fact, when I opted to earn annual leave instead of vacation/sick leave, I took a 4 hour cut.  I was making 14 hours vacation and 8 hours sick leave - now I get 18 hours annual leave. That was originally because I didn't like the normal Non-Industrial Leave benefit and I could get an enhanced NDI if I went to annual leave.  I was a newly single parent and concerned that if something happened and I had to take a lengthy time off, I wouldn't be able to support my family on the NDI benefit.  Now, it's just habit and since I'm so very close to my retirement, I'll just leave it at the annual leave.

I don't usually exceed my limits on annual leave.  Last year though, we started having to take furlough days before anything else.  AND, since my pay was cut 14%, I couldn't really afford to go away much during vacation.  So, I just didn't take all the hours off that I was entitled to.  At this point, I've made a plan to take them but I'm not gonna!!!!!!  If I were to take off all the time that it would take to get me down to the maximum hours by January 1, 2011, I would have to take 2 months off AND that's in addition to the furlough days!!!  COME ON!!! That's not even reasonable.  I'm the only one at my workplace that does my job function - who's gonna do this OCIO mandated function?  Our unit has lost 2 positions but gained functions that have to be done.  We're between the proverbial rock and a hard place.

That's my rant!
